The story is primarily set in the 1970s and closely follows the activities of the serial killer Charles Sobhraj during this time. With the help of his partner, the French-Canadian Marie-Andrée Leclerc, and the Indian Ajay, he deliberately lures Western tourists, drugs them, robs and kills them. He steals the passports and identities of his victims in order to carry out his activities disguised as a gem dealer.
Sobhraj does indeed fulfill some typical characteristics of psychopathy: a cool, calculating demeanor, recklessness, lack of empathy, and pursuing one’s own interests without regard for rules.
